The incumbent of the position works under the supervision of the Vice President Academic, and functionally under the Head of the MSc. Specialization – Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management. As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Associate Professor, Marine Science is expected to provide teaching/mentoring, research and publish in his/her field of expertise. Work involves full responsibility for teaching and curriculum development both introductory and specialization courses, mentoring PhD and M.Sc. students, serving on committees and panels, and providing technical advice and programme support service to WMU, IMO, and the maritime and oceans community. Working relationships: Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff as appropriate. External contacts – Incumbent liaises with the global maritime and ocean community, research organizations, as well as scientific journals and publishing entities.
Duties, responsibilities:
Teaching/Mentoring
Engagement in the PhD program at WMU Malmö with respect to supervision/mentoring and the progression evaluation process
Engagement in the MSc teaching program at WMU in Malmö and other locations as needed and assigned
Contribute to the development and/or delivery of Professional Development Courses (PDCs) as a part of a coordinated approach to assigned teaching duties
Participate in Distance Education courses as assigned
Maintain active engagement and remaining up-to-date in area of expertise, including collaborating with industry and professional bodies
Outreach/Engagement/Service
Service on the Academic Council, providing service to WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, curriculum and international/community outreach duties as required
Research/Scholarship
Monitor, assess, coordinate, improve and integrate proposals or feasibility studies for research projects
Conceive and submit project and research proposals as a member of the Marine Environmental Research (MER) group
Servicing intergovernmental meetings, negotiations or expert group meetings of a technical nature or presenting, describing and defending the work of the organizational unit at meetings and at external scientific seminars and other gatherings
May conduct training seminars and briefings of national experts for the transfer of results and methodologies elaborated in research activities.
Education: Ph.D. degree in a field related to marine science, marine ecology or oceanography.
Experience:
Minimum of five years experience in teaching at postgraduate level, including in the following areas:
Oceanography (geological, physical, chemical, biological)
Coastal and ocean ecology and resilience
Marine science
Ecosystem goods and services
Ocean health and sustainability
Adaptation to climate change
Marine and ocean issues and policies related to UN and IMO Conventions
Experience in developing marine science curriculum, appropriate assessment techniques, supervision of PhD and MSc students and their dissertations, and ability to use a range of delivery techniques
Teaching interests consistent with the Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management MSc. specialization and the Introductory Foundation term Marine Science course
Experience in project management in relation to teaching programs, research projects, and capacity building programs for developing countries
Desirable
Experience in planning and organising field studies for students.
Experience in organising conferences and seminars and fund-raising.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Desirable
Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.
